The “Water is Life” poster art contest is available to students in grades 3 through 12. The winning entries, submitted by teachers and students, are delivered to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) for further judging in the regional competition. Winners have an opportunity to be featured in an annual calendar that is distributed to over 13,000 recipients. Winners receive an honorary plaque, fun prizes, goodie bags for their whole class, a pizza party, a field trip, a special recognition ceremony, and more. Click here for more information.

High school students within our service area are invited to participate in the Broadcast Media & Digital Art Contest. The contest opens in early January of every year. Each year presents a different theme and opportunity for students to get creative about water education and conservation. First place winners receive $250. Click here for more information.

Get paid to discover a career made for you! The water industry makes up an essential workforce providing a public service and economic sustainability.

Students who live within the WVWD service area or attend one of the schools listed below are encouraged to apply. Part-time positions include administrative, finance/accounting, clerical support, water distribution, and field support. The internship program occurs during the summer and is a paid program. Students are required to commit to working part-time (16 hours per week), no previous work experience is required.

Interested in what a career in water could mean to you? WVWD’s Operations Internship is available to students seeking a position as an essential employee in the water industry. This is a 6-month paid internship program. Interns are required to commit to working part-time (16 hours per week), must have graduated from high school/GED/or equivalent, have a Water Distribution Operator Certificate – Grade D1, and be enrolled in or previously completed a Water Technology Program. Solar Cup is a FREE high school education program in which teams of students from throughout Southern California build and race solar-powered boats.  Walnut Valley Water District (WVWD) in partnership with Three Valleys Water District (TVMWD) and The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) sponsor teams through the seven-month program. The program typically culminates in a three-day competition at Lake Skinner in the Temecula Valley.  The program teaches students about conservation of natural resources, electrical and mechanical engineering, problem-solving, and much more. WVWD’s External Affairs team creates a customized water-education presentation for students from pre-K to college. This unique learning opportunity covers topics such as California’s water sources, supply, distribution, conservation, and water use efficiency. Follow the journey of water to Southern California via Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s (MWD) Colorado River Aqueduct. The tour is available as a virtual reality app for Apple and Android mobile devices. A headset is required for optimal viewing. You may also watch the tour as a 360-degree video in English or Spanish with or without a headset.

Immerse your students in the State Water Project (SWP) system and discover the 444-mile journey that water makes to Southern California. Students will virtually visit the Bay-Delta, Banks Pumping Plant, the California Aqueduct, Chrisman Pumping Plant, and Lake Perris. Students will also have the opportunity to view 360-degree photos of seven sites at Lake Oroville and the San Luis Reservoir.  The SWP virtual reality tour is available at the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. VR goggles are required for optimal viewing.  The tour can also be viewed without VR goggles on YouTube as a narrated 360-degree fly through in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.
